Dr. Charles Bertram

Dr. Charles Bertram was an Indiana high school basketball official and IHSAA official assessor for over 30 years. Dr. Bertram was one of the referees who officiated future ISU and NBA star Larry Bird’s 1974 sectional championship game. Dr. Bertram also refereed the final game in the iconic Central Gym for Central High School and when the gym re-opened he refereed ISUE’s first basketball game. He was instrumental in building the USI basketball program by serving on the search committees for hiring coaches, and being the first NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative and compliance officer. Which he continued until his death in 1999. He had many notable basketball moments; when he petitioned for and was granted an additional semester of eligibility for Chris Bowles, a senior stand-out; when USI won the Division II National Championships under Coach Bruce Pearl in 1995; when USI women were Division II National Runner ups in 1997, and LeAnn Freeland and Eileen Weber were awarded national NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, for which he wrote their applications. During his tenure, USI had no major infractions and he kept in close communication with and had an excellent rapport with the coaches.
